"Water, Rock, Light" is a body of work done when I attended Arte Studio Ginestrelle in Mt. Subasio, Italy in October 2014.
Having time to walk the trails of Mount Subasio reminded me how much nature can revive and transform us if we are open to the beauty. These paintings depict four elements: water, rock, light and the human presence.
My thoughts seem to come together when I visited the Tescio River waterfall. The light, sound, and colors of the beautiful natural pool contained all of the elements that had been in my mind. I created a triptych stitched together with burlap threads from the burlap cloth used at the art residency for various functional purposes. I titled the painting "Pax et Bonum" (see below) which means peace and goodness. This is an inscription that is found at Eremo della Carceri, the hermitage where St. Francis of Assisi prayed and lived. It is said that this is the greeting he gave to the people as he traveled the area preaching.
Having time to walk the trails of Mount Subasio reminded me how much nature can revive and transform us if we are open to the beauty. Our welfare and future depends on what the earth provides. Perhaps we will learn to work together to be stewards of the earth's beauty and bounty for future generations. My hope is that we can interact with our environment with the idea of peace and goodwill.
